Take Care of Your Heart and Your Health

This is the last day of American Heart Health Month but I hope the continuation for health improvement for you. With all the information out there and the great news that obesity in young children has decreased through better eating and more exercise, we need to continue those behaviors into adulthood. For those of us who have already reached adult status or even the dreaded elderly state, making the right food choices and adding daily exercise are still helpful. It’s not too late to take control of your health.

Remaining active mentally and physically correlates best with longer life. So, even if you or someone you love has diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, or risk factors for cardiovascular disease, all can be improved with the right actions.

Losing weight is probably the most difficult prospect. Most of us like immediate feedback (no pun intended) and reinforcement for good behavior. Because weight accumulates over years, it is unreasonable to believe you will see significant changes in a few days of healthy eating and exercise. It takes time for your good behavior to show, so don’t give up and don’t believe fad diets are an answer to your desires.

The closest thing to rapid weight loss and life-long sustainable weight control is the 5/2 eating plan combined with eating food choices advocated in the Mediterranean diet. If you can do something for one day, you can get up the courage to do it for two. Some of you have heard or read about the 5/2 eating plan before, if you haven’t, take a look at the concept and consider this approach to reducing weight. Studies show that along with weight reduction, blood glucose and insulin resistance decrease, (important in diabetes), cholesterol and blood pressure improve. (This is not for children, Type 1 diabetics, pregnant women or those breast feeding.)

Not only does weight loss occur with relative ease, you learn to eat the right foods and maintain the control over your health for a life time. This is not a fad diet. The 5/2 eating plan is a way of life and a path to longer life. The plan is the topic of my next blog on www.YourHeartBook.com. Hope you will join me there.

5,000 MILES ON A FAT TIRE BIKE! – SO FAR

5000milemark On a clear fall day in early September 2012, Mike Potter began his odyssey. He doesn’t do anything half-assed. It’s all or nothing with Mike. You will see what I mean if you take a look at his journey blog including hundreds of photos with videos along his route. The former newspaper owner and an ex-military media expert, Mike enjoys fitness and healthy eating. His line of Relaxed Chaos food and recipes is evolving.

IMG_9355From his home in Whitefish Montana, he pedaled east on a route that will take him around the perimetersleepinglocationoutsidesavannah of the US. The ascent across the Rocky Mountains through Glacier National Park and over Logan Pass was his first test of resolve and endurance. For someone with little camping experience, he has tested his recipes and become a pro – sleeping in a small tent in subzero weather to worrying about nocturnal creatures in the swamplands of Florida…and Mike doesn’t like snakes!

On his Surly Pugsley all terrain bike with over a hundred pounds of gear, this fat-tire bike has carried him across varied terrain andsnow biking through brutal weather. My friend Sue had the same bike in Antarctica; yesterday in front of Coffee DSCF7095Traders in Whitefish there was a Surly pulling a baby trailer; and Mike is putting his through brutal testing. He has experienced many worn out and flattened tires along the way. Friends and business everywhere have helped with repairs and lodging. Support from biking related businesses have eased his expenses and he is always in touch with Base Command at Wheaton’s Bike Shop in Kalispell Montana.

GO RED FOR WOMEN! – HEART HEALTH ALERT

 WEAR RED FRIDAY FEBRUARY 7TH

ECG_heartThe American Heart Association (AHA) chose February as their Go Red for Women alert month in 2003. Their aim was to bring critical information to the public and lower mortality from heart disease. Over the ten year interval, their action resulted in more than a 20% reduction in women dying from heart disease, but cardiovascular disease is still the #1 killer of both men and women.

Each year heart disease kills more people than all cancers combined. If each person learns their risks and reduces them, the likelihood of dying from a heart attack decreases. My book Your Heart – Prevent & Reverse Heart Disease in Women, Men and Children is on sale at a reduced price for the entire month of February to encourage more people to purchase it and learn what you can do to improve health. Instead of a box of chocolates, why not buy yourself or a loved one a copy of Your Heart? The information could save your life and the lives of those you love.

Consider giving Your Heart as a Valentine gift!

AMERICAN HEART MONTH

TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEART

MP900314151

February brings thoughts of love and heart-shaped boxes of chocolates. My thought today is to help you think about your own heart health and the health of those you love. There are few who don’t like chocolate and actually, valid studies show dark chocolate is beneficial and even a cup of hot chocolate now and then is good for you. One would taste good about now because this morning in northwestern Montana, the temperature is -20 degrees F. It is a sunny day but intensely cold.

When temperatures drop and snow piles up, it is a time when people with heart disease should stay indoors where it’s warm and avoid shoveling. You ask why? Because with narrowed coronary arteries, cold exposure can cause spasm and heart pain. If you have not been diagnosed with heart disease, experiencing chest discomfort in the cold may be a warning that you should see your doctor for a heart evaluation.

Cardiovascular disease is silent. There are no symptoms until the cholesterol plaques narrowing the inside of heart arteries reach a point where inadequate oxygen and blood flow to the heart muscle results in chest pain. Symptoms may be subtle, such as shortness of breath, upper back discomfort or even jaw pain. You may not recognize them as heart-related. You can have more than a 90% blockage and no symptoms. Seeing a physician and being diagnosed before a heart attack occurs can save your life. Nearly 50% of people who have a heart attack die before reaching a hospital.

Because of the increasing obesity in our society, Type 2 diabetes is increasing and with it heart disease. Obese children as young as 5 years old have signs of cholesterol accumulating in their arteries. Type 2 diabetes used to be a disease of old people, now it is seen in overweight teens. In the US, 66% of the population is overweight or obese. If you would like to calculate your heart risks and learn more about heart health, there are many valid sites to gain this information.

Internet sites of value: www.realage.com (a comprehensive health site), I have two blogs addressing health issues: www.YourHeartBook.com (Up-to- date information on heart health) and www.LipstickLogic.com (Women’s Health). In addition, reputable sites are found at major university centers. Information on the Internet is only as valuable as the accuracy of the source so take care with your choices.

Back from Antarctica – Expedition Lidia A Success!

IMG_6409 Air shot of expedition siteDSC_8006

After living 45 days in a tent encampment on the ice of Antarctica’s Holtanna Glacier, on January 10th, Sue flew to Cape Town, South Africa. There, she found herself staying in a beach guest house near a white sand beach and the local kite surfing spot. This location was a welcome contrast from sleepless nights in a wind-blown tent and working in the cold. After working for 48 straight hours, her crew flew first to Novo Base, the Russian research installation and then to Cape Town on an Ilyushin Russian cargo aircraft.

Their final days on site proved taxing for everyone. The aircraft was lifted out of the hole on airbags and onto its wheel-skis on Wednesday night and took to the air on Friday. When pilots arrived to fly the DC3-Turbo out, cold dead batteries and engines unable to start delayed their testing and take-off. After sleeping for only 2 ½ hours, on Friday morning Sue was awakened by the whining and coughing of one of the large engines struggling into the smooth sound they had been waiting for. This was soon followed by the second engine taking life. Finally Lidia was purring and back on her feet.

After a 200 meter test taxi run, the 68 year old Canadian pilot said, “We’re rolling.” He boarded Lidia with his co-pilot and the main mechanic. They taxied 1 km and took off with flaps and skis down, ferrying the plane to Novo where they landed one hour later!

After Lidia’s departure, the ground team had 2 hours to take down and pack the entire camp. They boarded a Twin Otter for the flight to Novo. It took two trips to carry everything and the expedition team. Guess what Sue did at Novo—she took a long hot shower and drank a well-deserved shot of Scotch!

About 9 pm, the team boarded the Ilyushin and arrived in Cape Town the following morning. Sue found herself staying at the same location as the Ilyushin pilots, at the Colombian and honorary Paraguay consulate. Relaxing on the beach, swimming in the pool, wine touring, a two day driving photography safari, along with getting around Cape Town, filled a week of relaxation after the arduous accomplishments in Antarctica. Sue arrived back home in Whitefish on January 19th after traveling 55 hours.

The following morning, in 20 degree weather, she walked 1.5 miles to Coffee Traders to meet her waiting friends. She appeared refreshed and says her biological clock will take a while to right itself. Right now, she is awakening at 0300, ready to go!

After additional attention to details and more testing, Lidia headed to the South America via Antarctica, through Central America, Mexico and to the US; then on to Canada where her main base is located. (As of January 25th, she is home and safely hangared.)

A number of photos with this final blog of Sue’s Antarctic trip will give you a clear picture of the beautiful rugged environment and their tremendous accomplishment. The crew had a few minor injuries and no illnesses, so Sue spent much of her time helping with the digging and extraction of Lidia instead of using her medical skills.

After a short rest, Sue is off to Colorado for a week long avalanche course above 12,000 feet, followed by teaching a number of wilderness medicine courses and a trip to Cordova Alaska for helicopter skiing. Check out her website at: http://www.cboutdoors.com for her teaching schedule and updates.

ANTARCTICA — 2014

Great News from Sue and Lidia!

Lidia.2

Today her joyful voice announced the team is about a week away from departing the expedition site. They are closing in on completing the rescue of a workhorse turbo-charged DC-3 named Lidia.

The photographs of Sue and the plane are compliments of a friend of hers, Brandon Shendruk who emailed them to us. The photos give us a perfect view of the plane and their accomplishments, confirming the amazing progress they have made digging out the plane and putting it back together.

Part of the terrific news is the final repairs and movement of the plane will be with the help of a dozen Russians, two of them pilots. Sue said the crew will likely be lifting the plane out of its current position in the snow using large airbags. This process will raise the craft so the landing gear and skis can be attached.

 Antarctica.1

The weather was calm today but a storm is approaching. They are hurrying to get the propellers and ailerons on by tomorrow night. Once the plane is moved onto a hard surface ice runway further testing can be done in preparation for flight.

Based on progress with all the Russian help, the mechanics are thinking Lidia will be ready to fly by Tuesday or Wednesday.

Sue says everyone is healthy and things are going well. The next anticipated flight to Cape Town is January 8th or 9th. She may be back in South Africa by next Thursday!

Mission accomplished will be very soon!

Betty

AN ANTARCTIC CHRISTMAS

AntarcticaGREETINGS FROM HOLTANNA GLACIER EXPEDITION

On 12/26, Sue called from the balmy white desert in T-shirt weather after an epic storm with 5 days of winds gusting between 60-100 mph. When the blowing snow cleared, assessment of the aircraft showed distressing additional work. The powerful winds packed ten feet of snow back around the plane, setting back a potential date for completion.

Winds swept large sheet-metal pieces away from the repair site and moved the camp outhouse 70 feet away from its usual location. The mess tent collapsed spilling jet fuel and 30 gallons of water on the floor. It was difficult keeping their tents warm during the storm because the winds often extinguished their stoves.

Improved weather allowed the digging out to resume and work to begin again on the engines. The rudder and stabilizers have been attached, so it looks more like an airplane again. Soon work on the landing gear and wheel-ski assemblies will start. The panel and instrument installations are under way.

Medical issues have been at a minimum. No one has developed major illnesses or injuries. Sue was concerned about the flying metal pieces and windblown debris causing major injuries, but none occurred.

Because of the rapid weather changes and heavy work schedule, Sue has not done much kite skiing. However, she and Lou Albershardt (chef and ice-core specialist) skied 2 km to visit a Norwegian expedition site. This was part of a television/movie project to be aired in Norway. The group of two women and four men arrived in a Twin Otter.  Much to their surprise, Lou knew some of them from previous travels.

The following URL will give you a clear view of the exact location of Sue’s expedition on Holtanna Glacier. http://stephan-siegrist.ch/en/projects/antarctica.2009

I am always interested in their diet and food supply, not to worry…On Christmas Day they ate better than most of us! The menu included: lobster tail, beef back strap, cheese hors d’oeuvers and a pony keg of beer.

Til next week —a New Year greeting from Sue.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM ANTARCTICA

Sue sends greetings from the icy desert. She reports the crew of twelve is doing well. Occasional minor injuries, but all members are in good health, making her medical work easy. She is working hard assisting in aircraft projects and still has enough energy left over to ski each day.

Before leaving for the expedition, Sue purchased kite-skiing equipment and has been testing it out. Kite skiing has become popular6-Learning-to-kite-ski-by-the-nunatak-mountain2 around the world, especially in Antarctica where it has been used by some teams as a utility to reach more inaccessible areas. Others are using it just for fun and excitement. Also called snow kiting, one school in CO is now certified to teach the extreme sport.

Recently the weather has been in the teens to 20-30’s with 30 knot winds. The winds make snow skiing exciting but problematic keeping stoves burning and makes working outside miserable at times. In spite of the extremes, the team is making amazing progress on aircraft repairs. We are unable to obtain photos from their remote site. Sue will likely send us photos when she is in Cape Town en route back in January.

Currently the DC 3 – Turbo is out of its ice encasement and is positioned on airbags that will soon be used to lift and position the airplane when the landing gear and wheel-skis are attached. They are currently working on the second engine and have significant repairs remaining on the left wing.

Meals continue to be delicious and nourishing to supply the high energy expenditure needed working under the extreme conditions. They live in numerous tents and eat together in a mess hall tent. Sometimes keeping the tests warm is difficult because of the windy conditions and downdrafts putting out the stoves. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a concern and all tents are vented because of this potential problem. Sue shares a 10 x 24 ft tent with the young female electronics technician.

We will hear from Sue again in a week. She wishes everyone a Happy Holiday!

Betty (Note: Photo is a stock example of someone kite skiing.)
